EQUIPMENT CONTROL SPECIALIST

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to participate in the analysis of equipment needs, prepare equipment specifications, and oversee the receipt and preparation of new equipment. The incumbent meets with personnel from operating departments to ascertain the departments' needs based on their usage. Recommendations are made to the Equipment Analyst concerning the kinds of equipment needed and dealers are contacted to obtain information pertaining to equipment and the preparation of specifications. An employee in this classification also coordinates multi-vendor equipment assembly and supervises and participates in the actual preparation of equipment for City use. The Equipment Control Specialist works under the general supervision of the Equipment Analyst.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Meets with representatives of City departments to discuss equipment usage and determine equipment needs;
- Makes recommendations to Equipment Analyst regarding technical aspects of equipment;
- Recommends which accessories and special features should be ordered or which should be installed after delivery based on using agencies' requests or needs;
- Prepares equipment specifications;
- Monitors delivery of ordered equipment, maintaining liaison with dealers;
- Coordinates chassis with body assembly where different vendors are involved for specialized types of equipment;
- Supervises the receiving process including necessary paper work to put the equipment into operation;
- Maintains accountability for approximately 150 retained surplus vehicles;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- The operating and maintenance requirements of automotives and construction equipment.
- The steps involved in introducing new equipment into an equipment management fleet system.
- The methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive and construction equipment trades.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone or in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Make moderately complex mathematical calculations.
- Prepare precise written reports.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid drivers' license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years experience in a large fleet activity involving the preparation and analysis of equipment specifications. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
