EQUIPMENT SHOP FOREMAN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Automotive Mechanics, and Equipment Repair Specialists engaged in the repair and maintenance of automotive and other mechanical equipment. The Foreman also inspects work in progress and upon completion, ensures that it meets required maintenance standards. Work includes the supervision of Equipment Service Workers I and II who perform a variety of cleaning and servicing operations. Employees in this class enter and retrieve maintenance data from an automated Equipment Management Information System, estimate material required by employees and requisition materials and supplies. This employee is required to have a set of personal tools, and when necessary due to operational or technical needs, perform repairs. This class is differentiated from the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor class in that responsibility for supervision is limited to one shift. General supervision is received from the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor with work being checked by results accomplished.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises employees engaged in repairing and maintaining mechanical equipment;
- Inspects repairs to mechanical equipment;
- Participates and instructs mechanics in the repair and reconditioning of automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, sweepers, gang mowers and other standard and specialized machinery and equipment;
- Participates and instructs mechanics in assembling and repairing cars, trucks, tractors, sweepers, mowers, spray equipment and other related units;
- Maintains accurate work records;
- Uses the computer based Equipment Management Information System to record work order information and access to other information;
- Performs inspections of completed repairs to ensure thorough and quality of repair and suitability of vehicle for return to service.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Methods, materials, equipment and operation of general automotive and mechanical repair shops;
- Motorized equipment repair, maintenance and testing;
- The characteristics and maintenance needs of a wide variety of automotive and mechanical equipment.
- The principles of supervision and personnel administration.
- Safety practices and principles.
- General trades techniques, materials and practices of trades which are related to automotive and mechanical repair work.
- EPA and ADEQ regulations for spill containment and disposal of petroleum products used in a shop environment.
Ability to:
- Motorized equipment repair, maintenance and testing.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibility over others.
- Organize equipment shop personnel assignments to meet work requirements.
- Read and interpret system reports to aid in management of shop and performance of assigned duties.
- Communicate orally in the English language in person in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Observe and monitor people's behavior objects or data to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Read and comprehend Material Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in the work environment and communicate to staff the precautions needed for safe handling of chemicals.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to incumbent or others.
Additional Requirements:
- This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience including some supervisory responsibility in the maintenance and repair of automotive and mechanical equipment as an automotive mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic or equipment repair specialist. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
