EQUIPMENT FABRICATION FOREMAN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise the fabrication and modification of vehicles or mechanical equipment. The incumbent estimates material required by employees; requisitions materials and supplies; inspects work in progress and upon completion, ensuring that it meets required specifications. Equipment Fabrication Foremen are required to have a set of personal tools, and when necessary due to operational or technical needs, perform modifications. Supervision is exercised over Auto Mechanics, Welders and Equipment Maintenance Helpers. This class is differentiated from the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor class in that the responsibility for supervision is limited to one shift. Equipment Fabrication Foremen work under the general supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, with work being checked by the results accomplished.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Plans, assigns and supervises the work of employees engaged in the fabrication and modification of vehicles and mechanical equipment;
- Correlates parts orders, maintains and updates parts and auto body repair manuals, and reviews daily time sheets and cost accounting data for accuracy;
- Inspects work performed by employees to ensure that it meets standards or specifications;
- Leads and instructs employees in the preparation of new vehicles for service, the preparation of vehicles for auction, and in the fabrication and modification of equipment for vehicles (tool boxes, racks, rails, safety screens, hitches, lift gates and other accessories);
- Inspects tools and equipment such as body repair tools, rivet guns, saws, metal brakes, and welding machines to ensure compliance with safe operating condition;
- Keeps accurate work records such as work orders, accident repairs, and stock- room inventories;
- Solicits estimates from outside vendors for equipment and vehicle modification.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Methods, materials, equipment and operation of general automotive, auto body and mechanical repair shops.
- Motorized equipment operation and testing (examples: dozers, graders and heavy duty trucks).
- General techniques, materials and practices of trades which are related to new vehicle make-ready.
- Principles and practices of fabricating and modifying equipment.
- Hydraulic and automotive electrical systems.
Ability to:
- The welding, modification and fabrication of equipment.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Observe or monitor objects such as laboratory equipment to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Work at heights greater than ten feet.
- Lift arms above shoulder level to work on the underside of vehicles.
- Work in small, cramped areas.
- Climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Move objects between 20-50 pounds short distances (20 feet or less).
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (C.D.L.). Pre-employment drug testing is required for C.D.L. positions. Employees in C.D.L. positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of skilled experience in body repair or sheet metal work, and one year of experience as a skilled welder. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
