EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to direct the operation of a satellite service center or other large shop operation and to supervise the work of employees involved in the repair and maintenance of automotive and other motorized equipment. Supervision is exercised over the classifications of Equipment Shop Foreman, Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Body Repair Specialist, and Equipment Repair Specialist. The Supervisor inspects work in progress and upon completion to ensure that it meets required maintenance standards. Employees in this class maintain varied records to control the flow of shop work, estimate material required, and requisition materials and supplies. Equipment Maintenance Supervisors work under the general supervision of an Assistant Maintenance Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises the operations of a service facility or specialized function;
- Plans, lays out, assigns, and supervises the work of foremen, mechanics, equipment service workers, aides and helpers;
- Ensures proper maintenance and repair of the airport fueling;
- Ensures that all applicable Environmental Protection Agency guidelines are met;
- Maintains appropriate inventory levels for all parts and equipment needed by fleet maintenance and welding shops;
- Inspects work performed by foremen, mechanics, equipment service workers, and helpers to ensure compliance with established standards;
- Correlates parts orders, maintains and updates parts manuals, and checks daily time sheets and cost accounting data;
- Maintains accurate work records and related documents;
- Monitors and maintains shop operating budget;
- Writes accurate and complete work reports for management use;
- Writes requests and scope of vendor work and evaluates responses;
- Resolves operational problems;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Methods, materials, equipment, and operation of general automotive and mechanical repair shops.
- General techniques, materials, and practices of trades which are related to automotive and mechanical repair work.
- Operational and maintenance needs of a wide variety of automotive and mechanical equipment.
- Motorized equipment repair, maintenance, and testing.
- Cost accounting principles and their relationship to program budgeting.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Observe employee work performance to determine compliance with prescribed operating standards.
- Interpret and make decisions in accordance with City ordinances, laws, regulations, and policies.
- Work cooperatively with vendors, other City employees, and the public.
- Use discretion and tact in resolving problems and dealing with various levels of management, co-workers, and the public.
- Communicate orally with co-workers, customers, and the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings.
- Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper English sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Enter and retrieve data or information from a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL). Pre-employment drug testing is required for CDL positions. Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Five years of skilled experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and mechanical equipment, including two years of supervisory experience. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
