EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to direct the repair and maintenance of City automotive and construction equipment. Supervision and direction are given to personnel maintaining and repairing equipment and performing related accounting and clerical functions. Work is performed with considerable independence with the framework of general policies established by the Deputy Public Works Director, who reviews equipment maintenance operations through conferences and the analysis of reports of shop production and equipment costs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Directs the operation of automotive shops for the repair and maintenance of automotive, construction, and special duty equipment, and servicing of automotive equipment;
- Investigates personnel problems and submits reports and recommendations;
- Establishes work policies, schedules, and repair and maintenance standards;
- Investigates equipment complaints and needs for modifications;
- Reviews and approves equipment and repair costs;
- Organizes shop facilities to meet fluctuating and unusual demands;
- Prepares budget estimates for maintenance operations;
- Establishes and maintains staff work schedules;
- Reviews the operation of shop accounting, statistical, and records systems;
- Plans, organizes, and supervises the work of supervisors, skilled and semi-skilled trades workers, and clerical employees;
- Prepares comprehensive reports of mechanical maintenance activities and costs;
- Maintains equipment preventative maintenance service schedules;
- Reviews and approves shop equipment inventory requests;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Principles and practices of automotive shop management.
- Methods, materials, equipment, and operation of general automotive and mechanical repair shop.
- Laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and other requirements governing the operation and maintenance of automotive and repair facilities.
- Characteristics and maintenance needs of a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment.
- Equipment cost record keeping practices.
- General techniques, materials, and practices of automotive mechanics, welders, machinists, and related trades.
- Principles and practices of personnel management and supervision.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Produce written documents in the English language with proper sentence construction, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
- Communicate orally with City employees and the public using a telephone and in group and face-to-face, one-to-one settings.
- Interpret and make decisions in accordance with OSHA and EPA rules and regulations.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Five years of experience in the supervision of maintenance and repair of automotive and mechanical equipment, including three years in fleet maintenance management. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
