EQUIPMENT SERVICE FOREMAN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to provide first line supervision of employees involved in the service, maintenance, and repair of fixed equipment and equipment repair facilities of the Equipment Management Division. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring the quality of fuel and for supervising the repair of the City's refueling system. Direct supervision is exercised over Equipment Service Workers I and II, and Laborers. The Equipment Service Foreman inspects work in progress and upon completion to ensure that it meets required standards. General supervision is received from an Equipment Maintenance Supervisor who checks work through results accomplished.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Supervises the service, repair, and maintenance of all mechanical equipment utilized by the equipment repair facilities of the Equipment Management Division, such as automotive lifts, bridge cranes, air and petroleum dispensing hose seals, pumps, pressure and steam cleaners, lubricating equipment, and air compressors;
• Supervises the repair of the City's refueling system;
• Oversees and screens requests for facility maintenance services;
• Oversees the Division's contracts related to custodial, pest control, and facilities services in the equipment repair facilities;
• Makes recommendations to the supervisor relating to the division's capital improvement projects, i.e., new construction or replacement of fuel tanks, or the development of basic plot plans and layouts for refueling locations or equipment repair facilities;
• Supervises the shop equipment preventive maintenance program and keeps records of the annual inspection of hoists and lifts;
• Opens work orders, reviews paperwork to ensure all necessary information has been noted, and ensures that work orders are properly closed;
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, equipment, and operation of automotive and mechanical repair shops.
• Equipment and procedures utilized in repair of automotive and heavy repair shop support equipment.

Ability to:

• Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
• Work cooperatively with other City employees, contractors, and the public.
• Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
• Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device to maintain work request registers.

Additional Requirements:

• Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
• Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Four years of experience in mechanical maintenance or the maintenance and repair of shop support equipment, including some supervisory or lead experience. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
