DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a variety of tasks while learning skills required to qualify for an entry level trades class, such as Automotive Mechanic, Building Equipment Operator I, Building Maintenance Worker I, or other appropriate class. Initial assignments are of a routine nature, but as knowledge increases and skill is developed, assignments become more difficult and incumbents are expected to use greater initiative and judgment. Instructions are received both orally and in writing and are quite detailed during the early stages of training, but become more general as experience is acquired.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Participates in a structured training program;
- Learns to perform minor automotive maintenance tasks such as fueling, lubrication, and general shop clean up;
- Learns to check the operation of vehicle service equipment such as lights, hand brakes, clutch pedals, horns or related items;
- Assists mechanic with minor repairs;
- Learns to perform preventive maintenance and repair work on equipment and component parts;
- Learns to clean and replace air filters and provide other assistance to Building Equipment Operators;
- Participates as helper doing non-complex carpentry, plumbing, and painting;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- The less complex mechanical parts of automotive equipment.
Ability to:
- The use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform various non-complex mechanical repair tasks such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, or building maintenance.
- Learn to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams or equipment specifications
- Learn the skills and techniques of a trade and to make progress toward meeting qualifications for entry to the trade.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public in a face-to-face, one-to-one setting.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Move objects between 20-50 pounds short distances (less than 20 feet).
- Use common hand tools, such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, or similar tools to perform minor repairs.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
- Lift arm above shoulder level.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Comprehend and make inferences from materials written in the English language.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid drivers' license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience or additional training in an applicable trades school. Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
