COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled work in the installation, routine maintenance, and repair of communications, dispatch, alarm, emergency, audiovisual, computer terminals, and other electronic devices and systems. Work is subject to inspections while in progress and upon completion for results obtained by a Telecommunications Specialist, Communications Foreman, or other supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs vehicular mounted communications equipment such as electronic sirens, antennas, microphones, and control consoles;
- Installs radio equipment;
- Installs, maintains, and repairs electronic devices and systems such as sound systems, recorders;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- The use of hand and power tools used for the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic equipment.
- The use of electronic test equipment.
- Read and interpret complex schematic diagrams and technical manuals.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.

- Think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, or the public in face-to-face, one-on-one settings or using a telephone.
- Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with operating and safety standards.
- Perceive the full range of the color spectrum to work with electrical wires.
- Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects such as small electronic parts.
- Lift arm(s) above shoulder level to install communications equipment.
- Work in small cramped areas while installing equipment in a vehicle, in a crawl space, or in an equipment enclosure.
- Climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Remain in standing or sitting positions for extended periods of time.
- Work under pressure (i.e., handling significant problems and tasks which come up simultaneously and/or unexpectedly, approaching deadlines).
- See small objects and small print on meters, dials, and schematic drawing details.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL). Pre-employment drug testing is required for CDL positions. Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of experience in either (1) installing and repairing electronic communications equipment in a fixed or mobile environment, or (2) monitoring and providing quality assurance on broadband communications systems. Up to one year of experience may be substituted by one or more years of formal electronics training. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
