BUILDING MAINTENANCE APPRENTICE
(Non-classified)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks while learning to perform at the journeyman level in any or all of the building trades. The beginning apprentice will receive routine assignments under close supervision. As the employee acquires additional knowledge and skill in the trade, assignments of increasing difficulty will be given until performance and technical ability are at the journeyman level. Instructions are received orally and/or in writing, and are detailed during initial stages of the apprenticeship, but progressively become more general as experience is acquired. Performance is judged on the basis of development of the appropriate skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Participates in a structured training program;
- Learns to rough and finish carpentry;
- Learns to install floor and ceiling tile;
- Learns to repair of concrete walkways and floors
- Learns to perform cabinet work;
- Learns to repair furniture;
- Learns to repair and fit doors, door locks, and windows
- Learns to painting and refinish objects;
- Learns to perform small plumbing repairs;
- Learns to perform minor electrical disconnections;
- Learns to perform small plastic repairs;
- Learns to repair roofs and dry wall;
- Learns how to use and care of for power tools;
- Learns how to read blue prints and sketches;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Learn semi-skilled maintenance and manual tasks.
- Learn how to use common purpose hand tools, materials and other equipment of the building maintenance trade.
- Perform basic arithmetic calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (greater than 20 feet).
- Use common hand tools, such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, or similar tools to perform minor repairs.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
- Lift arm above shoulder level.
- Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects (i.e., assembles peg washers, collar units, and inserts them into small hole).
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public in a face-to-face, one-to-one setting.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
- Work in small, cramped areas such as ceiling spaces, closets, etc.
- Work under hazardous conditions where physical danger exists due to mechanical equipment (i.e., grinding, cutting, crushing, etc.).
- Work around chemicals, gases, and other toxic or dangerous substances.
- Work around vermin such as spiders, scorpions, snakes, cockroaches, rats, etc.
- Work at heights greater than ten feet.
- Climb ladders or steps to reach work area.
- Make precise arm-hand positioning movements (example: operating an electric hand drill).
- Measure distances using a tape measure or other measuring device.
- Comprehend and made inferences from materials written in the English language.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job setting.
Additional Requirements:
- As a condition of continuing employment, the employee must satisfactorily complete the prescribed four year apprentice training program. The apprentice will be periodically evaluated during the training program. Apprentices may be terminated or demoted to their former class if they do not progress satisfactorily in either classroom training or performance on the job.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid drivers' license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Any combination of experience and education which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work may be substituted.
