MUNICIPAL SECURITY GUARD

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to provide security at municipal facilities. Duties include patrolling and observing the activities of persons in and around City buildings. Work involves assessing problem situations and exercising tact and judgment in bringing about their resolution. This classification reports to a Security Systems Supervisor, Municipal Security Guard*Lead, Administrative Aide/Assistant, or other supervisor. Performance is evaluated based upon results achieved. Some positions require working shifts, holidays, and weekends.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Visually patrols buildings, building grounds, and parking lots to observe unusual behavior and to prevent vandalism;
- Prevents unauthorized access to restricted areas;
- Remains at a fixed post to observe activities;
- Answers routine inquiries and directs visitors to appropriate areas;
- Completes log entries;
- Insures that all visitors and staff have vacated building at closing and performs a security check of all doors and windows;
- Enforces correction of infractions through verbal warning, expels unruly persons, and detains more serious offenders for proper authorities;
- Responds to after-hours security alarm calls;
- Escorts personnel from building after hours;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Communicate orally in the English language with the general public in a one-on-one, face-to-face setting.
- Communicate orally in the English language by telephone or two-way radio.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions provided in the English language.
- Prepare written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts with proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Work cooperatively, courteously, yet firmly with all segments of the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Appointments are subject to meeting appropriate background standards.
- Some positions require certification by the Police Department in the use of non-lethal security equipment, such as handcuffs and "pepper spray," by the end of the probationary period. Such certification must be renewed on an annual basis.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience as a security guard, police officer or military police officer. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
