CUSTODIAL WORKER I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform manual tasks involving the custodial care, cleaning, and minor maintenance of public buildings. Primary responsibility is for the use of proper methods, materials, and equipment in cleaning and keeping the buildings or equipment neat and sanitary. Employees work under the close supervision of a Custodial Supervisor I. Activities follow a well-established routine.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Cleans, sanitizes and deodorizes rest rooms;
- Sweeps and vacuums carpeting and floors using manual and power equipment;
- Mops, scrubs, waxes, shampoos, and spot cleans carpeting and floors;
- Empties waste cans and ash trays;
- Cleans woodwork, walls, and windows using common household equipment and cleaning products;
- Operates a riding vacuum cleaner and other large equipment for cleaning large areas;
- Cleans multilevel stairwells;
- Sweeps sidewalks and entrance ways;
- Cleans and dusts offices;
- Moves office and building furniture and equipment;
- Replaces light bulbs;
- Keeps equipment and supplies in order and requests re-supply when needed;
- Completes labor reports, time cards, and other short forms.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions given in the English language.
- Communicate orally in the English language.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Operate large and small power driven machinery such as a vacuum sweeper, buffer, or other similarly sized equipment.
- Work with cleaning fluids, chemicals, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment to maintain airport facilities.
- Clean areas using brooms, mops or other similar tools for the maintenance of airport facilities.
- Lift arm(s) above shoulder level to wash walls and windows and to dispose of trash bags.
- Move objects weighing less than 50 pounds, long and short distances.
- Walk long distances and remain in standing position for extended periods.
- Climb multilevel stairwells.
- Use common hand tools such as hammers, screw drivers or similar tools.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to pick up trash cans or litter.
- Climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
- Travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
- Work shifts and weekends.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
