EVENT SERVICES WORKER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a wide variety of manual work in support of such activities as conventions, luncheons, commercial exhibitions, and theatrical performances in which facilities of the Convention Center are utilized. Duties include janitorial service when other work is not of higher priority. Some positions supervise part-time staff and contracted temporary labor. Work is performed under the supervision of an Event Services Lead, and some positions work independently as they gain experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Moves and sets up or takes down moveable telescoping riser seats;
- Moves, sets up, takes down and positions chairs, tables or other furniture according to prescribed arrangement;
- Sets up or takes down moveable stage;
- Hangs drapes, flags, curtains and similar objects;
- Adjusts moveable partitions;
- Operates light motorized equipment such as a floor scrubber, fork lift, and light truck;
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs and waxes floors;
- Washes walls, windows, mirrors, furniture, and fixtures;
- Sets up special arrangements for commercial exhibits, conventions or other public activities;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Learn job-related material, such as cleaning methods, materials and equipment operation, primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job setting.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Measure distance using a tape measure.
- Use graphic instructions such as layouts, setup plans, and other visual aids.
- Operate power driven machinery, such as floor scrubbers or forklifts.
- Clean areas using a broom, mop or other appropriate tool.
- Frequently move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less), and move objects between 20-50 pounds long distances (more than 20 feet);
- Set up and remove folding tables, chairs, riser seats, and other similar objects.
- Wash walls, windows, mirrors, and other similar surfaces using such tools as a sponge, squeegee, and appropriate cleaning solution.
- Work with cleaning fluids, chemicals, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment.
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Employees in this class work irregular hours, evenings and weekends.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Must be willing and able to learn the functions of an Event Services Worker. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
