EVENT SERVICES SUPERVISOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise an assigned shift performing a variety of specialized tasks such as major set-up and take-down for conventions, meetings and theatre activities and cleaning duties in support of such activities at the Phoenix Convention Center and venues. Work involves supervising Event Services Leads who are responsible for organizing and directing the work of Event Services Workers, part-time Convention Center Workers and contracted temporary laborers. Frequent public contact is required. Work assignments are interpreted from printouts from a computerized event management system or are received from an Event Services Manager who provides general supervision and establishes priorities and standards, with the choice of methods and procedures left to the incumbent.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assigns work to employees, monitors work procedures, and inspects work in progress and upon completion;
- Plans details of setup for such activities as meetings, conventions, and exhibitions;
- Supervises employees engaged in setting up, taking down, and storing riser seats, tables, portable stages, and similar equipment;
- Trains and supervises employees in safe operation of equipment and routine minor maintenance of buildings and equipment;
- Ensures the availability of safe and usable tools, supplies, and equipment;
- Communicates with clients to clarify needs and to make recommendations for event setup;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Observe or monitor objects, data, and people's behavior to determine compliance with prescribed operating and safety standards.
- Review or check the work products of other to ensure conformance to standards.
- Measure distance using a tape measure.
- Use graphic instructions, such as layouts, setup plans, or other visual aids.
- Estimate labor or material costs from work plans.
- Comprehend and makes inferences from written material.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) short distances (20 feet or less).
- Set up and remove tables, chairs, bleachers, stages, or similar objects.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Enter data or information into a computer terminal or other keyboard device.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Employees in this classification work irregular hours, nights, and weekends.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience in convention center, theater, or custodial work, including one year of experience supervising work teams or one year as an Event Services Lead. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
