CUSTODIAL SUPERVISOR I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise the custodial operation performed in public buildings on an assigned shift. The Custodial Supervisor I is responsible for planning, assigning and supervising the work and training of Custodial Workers I and II engaged in cleaning and minor maintenance tasks. Specific oral and written instructions accompany major assignments but the employee makes ordinary decisions and is responsible for planning work schedules and methods. Work is performed under general supervision of a Custodial Supervisor II or Aviation Supervisor and work is reviewed on the basis of results obtained.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise employees engaged in keeping buildings, equipment and airport premises clean and orderly;
- Instructs Custodial Workers in proper custodial and safety methods;
- Keeps time and attendance records;
- Assigns employees to accomplish assigned tasks;
- Reassigns and adjust crews to respond to special terminal operations and document changes;
- Operates an automobile, small truck, or delivery van to transport injured employees to the Occupational Medical Center, to pick up and deliver supplies/equipment, and to other City facilities and offices;
- Pick up lost and found items and deliver to Operations;
- Prepare written disciplinary actions, memos, and employee performance appraisals;
- Inspect all areas of terminals, including concourses, stairwells and tenant locations for cleanliness and unusual activity;
- Inspect equipment for proper working condition;
- Respond to requests of tenants;
- Acts as a liaison between terminal tenants and vendors;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Materials, supplies, and practices essential to the cleaning of buildings.
- Use and care of wet and dry vacuum cleaners, floor buffing machines, mop wringers, mops, brushes, soaps, floor stripping materials, cleaning fluids, floor waxes and other materials and equipment related to the custodial care of buildings.
- Hazards and safety methods related to custodial operations.
- Generally acceptable workplace conduct.
- Supervisory practices.
- Communicate in the English language in writing and orally with individuals in a face-to-face, one-on-one or group setting or by telephone.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions given in the English language.
- Produce documents written in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Performs a broad range of supervisory responsibility over others.
- Recognize and correct inappropriate behavior.
- Instructs others in the methods and operation of equipment.
- Inspect airport terminals and stairwells for safety hazards and cleanliness.
- Ensure that airport tenants follow operational rules.
- Observe, compare, or monitor data, objects, and people's behavior to determine compliance with prescribed safety and operating standards.
- Perform physical inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Respond to trouble calls in terminals and outlying areas in a timely manner.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Move objects weighing less than 50 pounds, long and short distances.
- Walk long distances and remain in a standing position for extended periods.
- Climb multilevel stairwells.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location or shift.
- Some positions require the use of a personal or City vehicle on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience in building custodial work, including one year of lead experience. Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
