Charging Bureau
The Charging Bureau is responsible for reviewing cases submitted by the Phoenix Police Department for prosecution and consists of ten attorneys and sixteen legal clerks. The Charging Bureau attorneys also represent the State in the Initial Appearance Court at the Maricopa County Jail (Jail Court), which includes requesting appropriate bail and conditions of release, such as travel restrictions.
The Charging Bureau Chief and Assistant Bureau Chief are liaisons with the Police Department concerning report requirements and charging standards. They are liaisons with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office concerning the referral of cases for felony prosecution and cases referred to the Prosecutor's office for misdemeanor prosecution instead of felony prosecution.
Within the Charging Bureau is the Records Center. The Records Center maintains approximately 200,000 criminal misdemeanor casefiles for the current year and two previous years, three additional years are housed at Archives. Staff serves the Prosecutor's Office by filing, transferring, and retrieving casefiles.
