City Prosecutor's Office
Technology Unit
The Technology Unit is responsible for developing technology projects to improve the business systems of the Prosecutor's Office, training attorneys on preparing and conducting visual trials, maintaining the public and internal Web sites, responding to media requests, administrating grants, video production, reviewing legislation, and tracking bills.
The Technology Unit is currently working on developing an application that allows the Prosecutor's Office to receive electronic copies of police reports automatically from the police department and to store an electronic copy of all other case related evidence including police reports, photos, audio interviews, 911 calls, accident reports, crime lab reports, restitution documentation, and victim impact statements. This project will greatly enhance the efficiency of the Prosecutor's Office by giving all staff simultaneous access to any case evidence from their offices and the courtroom. The long-term goal is to electronically disclose all evidence to defense attorneys. This will eliminate copying approximately 1,250,000 copies of evidence annually that is currently required to meet the legal disclosure requirement of the Arizona Rules of Criminal Procedure.
The Technology Unit trains attorneys on how to conduct visual trials using PowerPoint and the media equipment. The Unit maintains the Impaired Driving PowerPoint presentation and develops ways to improve visually presenting trials. The Unit also provides technical support to the Office on developing visually enhanced presentations.
The Technology Unit updates and maintains the Law Department Web site, Victim Information Center, Interactive Disclosure Center, and Law Department Intranet site. The Victim Information Center provides information on the court process, resources for victims, and forms for victims to update their contact information, submit restitution requests and prepare victim impact statements. The Interactive Disclosure Center is a repository of information related to impaired driving cases that defense attorneys are directed to obtain and is used extensively to comply with the office's disclosure obligations. It also includes the HGN logs electronically entered by all certified HGN officers with the Phoenix Police Department.
The Technology Unit films and prepares training DVDs for prosecutors within the office and around the state. In addition, members of the Technology Unit prepare and film training and informational segments for the Phoenix Police Department called "Legal Limits."
The Legislative Attorney within the Technology Unit provides technical support to the legislature, city staff and the Prosecutor's Office, drafts new legislation, reviews legislation, tracks pending bills during the legislative session, and drafts and reviews city ordinances.
