The Phoenix City Council today appointed Greg Stanton to serve as the interim District 6 council member. Stanton will take office Thursday and serve until a special election is conducted Sept. 12.
"We have many issues and priorities facing the people of District 6, and I will work closely with residents and neighborhoods to protect and improve their quality of life," he said.
Among his goals are working for desert preservation, preserving open space and improving public safety.
Stanton has been active in District 6 for many years, having served on the Camelback East and Ahwatukee Foothills village planning committees. He currently is volunteering for the Transit 2000 committee, citing that his father, Fred, took the bus to and from work as a shoe salesman for 22 years. He also has participated in many other community activities such as the Phoenix Citizen's Police Academy and Valley Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Stanton grew up in west Phoenix and his parents still live in the same house where he was raised. An attorney representing public school districts, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and has an undergraduate degree in political science and history from Marquette University.
