Outstanding Community Contributors Earn CDBG Awards

Four people and projects that made outstanding contributions to the community were presented with awards by Mayor Skip Rimsza Tuesday as part of Community Development Block Grant week.

Silvia Salas was presented with the Lupe Sisneros Memorial award for empowering youth and their families to improve schools and the community and for her ongoing efforts to improve the Butler Bulldogs neighborhood near 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street. Salas co-founded the Amistad Neighborhood Association and serves on the board of directors of Neighborhood Housing Services. |

Arizona Republic Charities earned the Partnership Award for responding to the need to increase shelter services for victims of domestic violence. Spearheaded by Gene D'Adamo, Arizona Republic Charities was a leader in organizing the "One Bed, One Life" campaign. Additionally, they committed to match every dollar raised. In only two months, the campaign raised $500,000 that was then matched by the Charities. |

The Neighborhood Revitalization Award for commitment to revitalizing their neighborhood and making Phoenix better was presented to the Community Excellence Project. The project was born out of the efforts of residents living in the area between 24th and 32nd streets, the Salt River to Roeser, to take back their community and rid the area of crime. Since 1990 they have built 15 new homes, cleared a site formerly a haven for drug-dealers, assisted 1,000 businesses and created 150 jobs through the CDBG funded small business assistance center. |

Dynamic Labs, L.L.C. earned the Economic Development Award for supporting the economic development goals of the city of Phoenix. This woman-owned business has shown a commitment to the Enterprise Community. Using the EXPAND program enabled this business to increase sales and surpass its goal for job creation. |
Across the country communities are celebrating CD Week to share information about critical projects and services funded by CDBG, a federal Housing and Urban Development program.
