Maccarone Appointed Phoenix Public Information Director

August 2, 2001

The City of Phoenix has promoted Toni Maccarone to the position of public information director.

Maccarone, 34, has worked for the past nine years as a public information officer for Phoenix. Previously, she spent four years as an account executive with two local public relations and advertising firms.

In her new position, she will be responsible for managing the city's Public Information Office which includes the city's cable television station, Phoenix Channel 11, and the Phoenix Film Office, which markets the city as a film location to motion picture, advertising and commercial photography industries.

"Whether it's getting out routine information to our residents or producing campaigns to fight graffiti or random gunfire, Toni has earned everyone's respect as an honest, hard-working professional," said Marsha Wallace, deputy city manager. "Her balance of education, skills and experience earned her a promotion."

Maccarone is a veteran at working on complex issues under tight deadlines with senior executives, elected officials and the news media, Wallace said.

"She has an excellent understanding of city departments, programs and services," Wallace added, "and she is committed to expanding the ways the organization communicates with our diverse community."

Since 1992, Maccarone has handled media relations, publications and special events for the Phoenix City Council. She also supervises the design and content of the city's web site, Phoenix At Your Fingertips.

An accredited public relations professional, Maccarone has served as president and long-time board director of the 240-member Valley of the Sun chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Her work has been recognized in awards competitions sponsored by PRSA, Women in Communication and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

She earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and public relations at Arizona State University and speaks regularly to communications classes at colleges and universities.
