City of Phoenix Housing Department Earns Two Awards of Excellence
July 23, 2001
The city of Phoenix Housing Department has earned two Awards of Excellence from the Arizona Housing Authority Director's Association.
The AHADA presented its "Housing Authority Employee of the Year" to Housing Program Assistant Ed Snelling for his three-year volunteer project, Conversational English classes for Non-English Speaking Residents, at the Luke Krohn public housing development in Phoenix.
Through his efforts, Luke Krohn residents have improved their ability to handle daily business activities and to communicate at their places of work in English.
Earning the AHADA Program Innovation award was the Housing Department Club 2000 Program. Club 2000 was created to increase awareness of home ownership opportunities for participants in the Family Self-Sufficiency program, such as the numerous first-time homebuyers programs available to low-income Phoenix residents to assist with closing costs and down payments.
This past year, 15 Club 2000 participants were able to purchase their first home or planned to purchase a home. Ten more are in the process of pre-qualifying for a mortgage. The awards were presented earlier this week as part of the Arizona Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials annual conference held in Tempe.
