Phoenix City Councilman Greg Stanton and State Land Commissioner Mike Anable announced today that an agreement in principle has been reached for the 620-acre parcel of master-planned State Trust land in Ahwatukee Foothills. The City Council approved the plan at its meeting today.

Known as the "South Mountain 620," the land is located between 19th and 27th avenues, south of the South Mountain Park Preserve to Pecos Road. Under the agreement, the city will have the opportunity to purchase all of the land north of Chandler Boulevard for preservation as open space as well as other public uses. Additionally, the agreement addresses the educational needs of the community, including the possible purchase of a larger school site.

"The Ahwatukee Foothills community asked me to advocate for preserving open space and supporting our school districts. I am pleased that this agreement meets both of these objectives," said Stanton, who represents District 6.

"Thanks to the dedication on the part of all interested parties, we have reached a solution that addresses the needs of the city, schools and community, while at the same time protecting the interests of the public education land trust. This was always the goal and I appreciate the cooperative efforts by all concerned parties that contributed to its attainment," said Anable.

Dick Foreman, governing board member of the Tempe Union High School District agreed, adding that "The fundamentals are now in place for a successful conclusion to the mediation process. We look forward to working with our partners at the City of Phoenix, Ahwatukee Foothills Village Planning Committee, State Land Department and the School Facilities Board to finalize the details of this agreement."
