Phoenix Sister Cities Commission Recognized For Excellence
June 27, 2001
The Phoenix Sister Cities Commission is receiving national attention for its outstanding work in economic development and disability awareness. Phoenix is the only city in the country to be recognized in two categories by Sister Cities International at the annual Low Wozar Awards luncheon in Atlanta next month.
The commission earned the Innovation: Economic Development Award, for its outstanding work in economic relations with sister cities Calgary Canada; Catania, Italy; Chengdu, China; Grenoble, France; Hermosillo, Mexico; and Taipei, Taiwan. The Phoenix Sister Cities program helps small- and mid- sized businesses develop economic relationships with different countries.
For the third year in a row, Phoenix Sister Cities will be presented the NOD/AETNA Disability Award for its efforts to involve disabled persons in the Sister Cities program. Phoenix is the only sister city organization in the U.S. to have a disabilities awareness committee, and actively recruits disabled people to the program.
Phoenix Sister Cities will send a delegation to the Sister Cities International conference in July to accept the awards.
