Council Approves Fight Back Areas
June 5, 2001
The City Council today approved eight new neighborhood Fight Back areas, putting them in line for special improvements designed to have a lasting impact.
One neighborhood in each council district is designated a Fight Back Area each year. The area must be no more than one square mile in size and generally experience higher than normal rates of crime and blight.
The program offers the areas specialized support over a period of 18 to 30 months, depending upon the range of issues, to assist with resident driven neighborhood improvement efforts such as revitalization, sustainability, crime and blight reduction, resident participation, neighborhood leadership, development and community building.
Since its inception in 1989, 90 neighborhoods have been designated Fight Back Areas. Improvements in those areas have included the development of parks, the installation of playground equipment, street lights and traffic diversion devices.
