Phoenix Announces Grant Funds For Brownfields Redevelopment

May 22, 2001

If you are a business owner, nonprofit organization or developer and are considering the purchase of real estate in Phoenix, the city of Phoenix can help if you discover environmental contamination.

If the property you are considering is a "brownfields," an abandoned or under-used site that has potential for development, but the complications and costs associated with environmental contamination is preventing development, then you could qualify for assistance.

The Brownfields Land Recycling Program provides services for properties that contain actual or highly probably environmental contamination and meet the following criteria: commercial or industrial zoning, vacant land, or unoccupied or under-used property. The project must have a completed plan for redevelopment.

Financial assistance is available for your project through grants for public infrastructure improvements in public easements or rights-of-way. Infrastructure includes curbs, gutters, sidewalks, landscaping, trails, utilities, etc. Grants also are available for development fees, including construction plan reviews and permitting.

The city supports the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated properties known as brownfields. For more information, call (602) 256-5669 or visit phoenix.gov/ENVPGM/brownfld.html on the Internet.
