NEWS RELEASE - POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT KNOCK DOWN PROJECT City of Phoenix, Arizona, Official Municipal Web site - City News

Phoenix Police Department Announces Neighborhood Improvement Knock Down Project
1802 W. Sahuaro Drive

May 11, 2001

Starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 12, members of the Phoenix Police Department along with staff from the Phoenix Fire Department, Building Inspections Office and the Neighborhood Services Department will begin demolishing and removing the buildings from the property formerly known as "Grandma Lee's." Two large buildings and a trailer currently are located on the three-quarter-acre lot located at 1802 W. Sahuaro Drive in north Phoenix.

For many years the property has been a haven for transients, drug addicts, prostitutes and other criminal elements, and has been a constant source of calls for service to the Police Department. Residents also have been complaining to city of Phoenix officials to do something about this area of neighborhood blight.

With the persistent efforts from Councilwoman Peggy Bilsten's office, several city departments and literally hundreds of volunteers, including several Valley construction companies, the removal of this blighted property is finally due to begin. "Our community leaders have been instrumental in working with Police, Fire and other city departments to clean up this blighted property," said Councilwoman Peggy Bilsten, District 3. "Because of this partnership, we now will be able to make this area of our city clean and livable once again."

For further details or questions, contact Officer Rodney Mindrup, project coordinator, at the Desert Horizon Precinct Community Action Office at (602) 534-1747 or by pager at (602) 261-0102.
