Phoenix Kids Pride Announces Winners
Homeless, Veterans and Anti-Tobacco Among Favorite Causes
May 14, 2001
Today’s youth are more community-minded than ever, and evidence of this dedication to helping others is in the recently announced winners of the annual Phoenix Kids Pride Awards. And if this year’s applicants are any indication, volunteerism in this community should be at an all-time high in 10-20 years.
Approximately 160 winners recently were honored for their energy, creativity and volunteer works in the 2001 Phoenix Kids Pride Awards, a program presented by the Phoenix Pride Commission that recognizes and honors young people who do special volunteer efforts within the community.
The winners were presented with their awards and treated to a baseball game at Bank One Ballpark on May 12. Radio Disney is the program sponsor in cooperation with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 12 winning entries include:
- A seven-year-old who organized a clothing and food drive to benefit the Andre House;
- A 16-year-old who as a Phoenix Police Explorer worked with high-risk youth to help them avoid getting involved with gangs;
- A high school club committed to volunteerism that has become the club to join;
- A group of grade-schoolers that collected money for firefighting equipment;
- A group of 40 high school students that performs an anti-tobacco musical at schools throughout the state.
The entries are divided into three age categories: kindergarten - 5th grade, 6th - 8th grade and 9th - 12th grade. The winners receive $500 for both individual and group efforts, and were selected from approximately 50 entries.
