Water Flows Into Lake at Steele Indian School Park
May 29, 2001
Water began flowing Tuesday afternoon into a 75-acre oasis in the heart of central Phoenix bringing a decade-long effort one step closer to reality. Mayor Skip Rimsza and Councilman Phil Gordon were joined by a representative of the Phoenix Community Alliance to watch the first flow of water into the bird-shaped lake at the heart of Steele Indian School Park.
The park encompasses the facilities of the now-closed Phoenix Indian School at Seventh Street and Indian School Road.
The park will offer a 30-acre open space known as Phoenix Green; a 15-acre entry garden featuring a reflecting pond; 15-acre neighborhood park featuring a playground, ball courts, sand volleyball and picnic ramadas; a grass amphitheater that will be able to seat 2,000 people; and the 2.7 acre lake. Workers are scheduled to finish construction this fall.
