Bike Lane Signs Designate 40-Mile Route Throughout Phoenix
Nov. 1, 2001
Residents, motorists and cyclists soon
will see colorful bike lane signs that mark a 40-mile, on-street bikeway that
extends from South Mountain Park, cuts through the heart of Phoenix and meanders
north of the Loop 101 to the reaches of Sonoran Desert Preserve.
The idea for the signs was recommended to the Phoenix City Council by the Arizona Bike Club, which first identified the route and helped select the sign design. See attached for image of the sign or check the city's Web site at phoenix.gov/newsidx.html.
The artist, Pat Ten Eyck, also is a member of the bike club and worked closely with the Street Transportation Department on this project. The City Council approved the bikeway in November 1999, and Highway User Revenue funds were used to cover costs.
Approximately 200 signs, or two signs per mile, will identify the bikeway that includes segments of Central and Third avenues, 12th Street and Cave Creek Road.
