National League of Cities Race Equality Day

The city of Phoenix recognized the National League of Cities Race Equality Day Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Phoenix City Council meeting, City Council Chambers, 200 W. Jefferson St. followed by a reception in the Calvin C. Goode Municipal Building, 251 W. Washington St.
Several city departments and commissions, and community partners gave presentations on the city's efforts to promote racial equality and justice. Carole Coles Henry, Equal Opportunity Department acting director, spoke about EOD's compliance and enforcement, and education efforts, and Rory Gilbert, Phoenix Human Relations Commission chair, discussed plans to address racial justice issues in the community.
Deborah Byers-Black, Phoenix Police Department assistant chief, and Gary Fell, Phoenix Police Department Hate Crimes Advisory Board co-chair, updated the city council on their meetings with community groups to address human and civil rights issues.
Cynthia Lin, Phoenix Youth and Education Commission member and senior at Desert Vista High School, presented on overview of the Youth Diversity Initiative Grant that helps schools create and implement programs to promote cultural awareness and diversity.
A reception following the presentation included remarks by Councilmember and National Black Caucus-Local Elected Official board member Cody Williams, other elected officials and members of the Phoenix Human Relations Commission.
The National League of Cities recently held its second annual Race Equality Day, as part of a nationwide campaign to foster racial equality and harmony.
