Student and Community Awards Presented During Disability Awareness Month

Sept. 13, 2001

The 2001 Ability Counts Community and Student Awards will be presented at the Ability Counts Luncheon at noon Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Phoenix Civic Plaza Ballroom, Third and Jefferson streets, as part of the city of Phoenix's Disability Awareness Month activities. Tom Whittaker, the first disabled person to reach the top of Mt. Everest, will give the keynote address at the luncheon.

The Phoenix Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues and the city's Equal Opportunity Department coordinate the Ability Counts Community Awards Program, which recognizes individuals and organizations that contribute significantly to the advancement of people with disabilities. This year's community award winners are:

  • Architectural Accessibility Award - Phoenix Museum of History and Langdon Wilson Architects
  • Employee of the Year Award - Julian Sifuentes, Pitney Bowes Management Services
  • Employer of the Year Award - Sports & Entertainment Services, LLC
  • Media Award - Discover Card Services/BOOST Program
  • Phoenix Mayor's Advocacy Award - Joe Stanislawski, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Arizona Chapter

The annual student awards program recognizes outstanding students with disabilities for their personal and academic achievements. For students in grades one through nine, the first place winner will receive $500 and the second place winner will receive $250. For 10th grade through college, winners will receive awards of $2,000 for first place and $1,000 for second place.

Robert Work (second place) Thunderbird High School

Fernando Cruz (first place) Arizona State University West
Kristin Hoffman (second place) Mesa Community College

The Ability Counts Luncheon is sponsored by the Phoenix Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues, Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department, Aramark, KTVK 3TV, Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America.
