City to Honor Kids Who Help Victims of New York and Washington Terrorist Attacks

Sept. 27, 2001

Phoenix's Kids Pride Committee on Tuesday expanded its annual awards program to include Phoenix children who are doing extraordinary work in other parts of the world, in recognition of Sept. 11's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

"Normally limited to Phoenix-focused volunteer efforts, the seven-year-old awards program is acknowledging the unusual and commendable efforts that Phoenix's young citizens are making on behalf of communities throughout the world as well as the victims of the worst tragedy in U.S. history," said Art Brooks, chairman of the Phoenix Kids Pride Committee.

"The outpouring of support and empathy from the children and youth in our community in light of the recent tragedies has been phenomenal," said Brooks. "Such efforts deserve as much recognition and reward as we can give them. Too often, all we hear about are the bad things that young people do. This is a chance to highlight the really positive contributions they make to Phoenix and our neighbors."

The Phoenix Kids Pride Awards program is an annual event each May that honors dozens of Valley youth in a public ceremony, as well as giving them cash awards of $500. It is a competition-based event, in which young people and their parents or other adults are encouraged to submit examples of their work to a panel of distinguished Phoenix residents, who serve as judges.

Prior to Tuesday's decision, to be eligible for a Phoenix Kids Pride Award, candidates had to:

1. live in Phoenix but conduct a volunteer campaign benefiting a neighboring community in the metro area;
2. live elsewhere in the Valley but do work that benefits Phoenix communities or
3. live in Phoenix and have the volunteer project benefit a Phoenix community. The application deadline for the next round of awards is March 18, 2002.
