April 11, 2002
Phoenix Mayor Skip Rimsza and the City of Phoenix Aviation Department are pleased to announce the arrival of Hawaiian Airlines as the 22rd airline providing service to passengers using Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Hawaii's longest-serving and largest airline will provide daily non-stop service between Phoenix and Honolulu beginning October 11, 2002 using state-of-the-art Boeing 767-300ER extended range aircraft with a capacity of 252 passenger seats.
"The City of Phoenix and the state of Arizona are going to benefit tremendously with the addition of Hawaiian Airlines service," said Mayor Rimsza. "Both economically and culturally, we are continuing our mission to make Phoenix an important destination and Sky Harbor, a Gateway to the World"
Prior to this announcement, only two flights per week had non-stop service to Hawaii.
"We are very excited to offer even more non-stop service to our passengers," said Phoenix City Councilwoman Peggy Bilsten. "As the Chairwoman of the Transportation, Aviation Transit and Technology Subcommittee, I am so pleased that airlines are recognizing the great potential that Phoenix and our airport have to offer."
This additional service will also benefit tourism throughout the state of Arizona.
"The addition of this flight creates a great connection between the contrasting beauties of Arizona and Hawaii," said Mark McDermott, director of the Arizona Office of Tourism. "Arizona's tourism industry benefits incrementally when the state is connected to another destination by a daily, non-stop flight."
