"We Are Nature" Art Project Debuts on Cave Creek Wash Bikeway
April 17, 2002
A new public art project at the north end of the Cave Creek Wash bikeway in north Phoenix will debut just in time for Earth Day. A special dedication ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Cave Creek Golf Course, 15202 N. 19th Ave. The public is welcome to attend the ceremony to view the installation, meet artist Kathy Hoyer and enjoy refreshments.
The "We Are Nature" project consists of a six-sided ramada with shaded seating, a low wall inscribed with a quotation and a patio surface imprinted with leaves and other natural elements. Hoyer designed a semi-circular, 42-inch-high wall of rammed earth to blend in with the environment of the surrounding area and provide respite, renewal and reflection for Cave Creek Wash bikeway users. The wall is capped with concrete that has been inscribed with a quotation from internationally recognized landscape architect Dan Kiley that reads "It's not us and nature. . . or us in nature. We are nature. Just like the trees."
Trees have been planted adjacent to the installation and a drinking fountain will be installed to create an oasis of shade and water at the rest stop for bicyclists and pedestrians.
Hoyer is an Oracle, Ariz., resident whose other current art works include installations for the city of Tucson's North West Community Center and a road improvement project for Skyline Drive. She divides her time between Arizona and The Netherlands, where she has had more than 20 exhibitions in museums and galleries.
The "We Are Nature" project is a collaboration of the Phoenix Arts Commission, Street Transportation Department and Parks and Recreation Department, made possible in part by federal Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act and Parks and Recreation Percent for Art funds.
