National Experts to Study Rio Salado Beyond the Banks
April 3, 2002
Construction is underway to transform five miles of the Rio Salado from a barren, dry riverbed to a recreation and habitat area with enough water to restore native grasslands, trees and wildlife. The $85 million project is planned to be completed by the end of 2004.
A key component to the project will be working with the community, developers and existing property owners and businesses to create a plan for the 10-square-mile area beyond the banks. To maximize this area, the city of Phoenix has partnered with the local chapter of the Counselors of Real Estate to bring in experts from across the country on April 3 - 8 to focus on how to achieve the potential of the Rio Salado beyond the banks.
Members of the consulting team were selected for their ability to provide objective advice on the challenges and opportunities facing the beyond the banks' planning area. In addition to reviewing data and studies on the area, an important part of the panel's week-long assessment will be interviews with local community leaders and individuals who will provide more insight into the area's planning and development direction.
"Having consultants of this caliber helping to identify the best use of this land is a tremendous benefit to our residents," city of Phoenix Assistant Planning Director Joy Mee, CRE, said. "The skill and expertise they bring to this project is exceptional."
CRE will announce its findings and recommendations at a news conference April 8.
Founded in 1953, the CRE is a 1,100-member organization of the world's leading real estate advisors. Members include high-level professionals of prominent real estate, financial, legal and accounting firms, as well as leaders in government and academia.
