West Phoenix School Gets $2,700 from Phoenix Vice Mayor
Jan. 25, 2002
Vice Mayor Claude Mattox today donated $2,700 that he "won" in a promotional drawing to Villa de Paz Elementary School in west Phoenix to help establish a computer-based, money-management curriculum.
Mattox, also the District 5 City Council member, was among community leaders that Washington Mutual Bank invited to participate in its "WaMoola Madness" game, which directed winning proceeds to an accredited school of the leader's choice. Mattox had 30 seconds inside a Plexiglas booth to grab flying cash. Washington Mutual then matched what he collected, and the entire amount was given to Villa de Paz Elementary.
Despite the fun and games, there is a serious side to the promotion, Mattox said.
"The earlier you teach our young people about business and money management, the more prepared they will be for the workplace of the future," he said.
Washington Mutual also has agreed to set up a school savings program for Villa de Paz students. The program works with parents and teachers to enable children between kindergarten and sixth grade to open and manage real savings accounts. The children are rewarded with educational prizes, such as book bags, for achieving savings milestones.
