The Phoenix City Council has elected District 5 Councilman Claude Mattox to serve as vice mayor for 2002.
"I appreciate the confidence and support of my fellow council members," said Mattox, whose district includes west Phoenix. "My goals over the last two years have been to create safer neighborhoods, attract economic growth and improve the quality of life. I look forward, as vice mayor, to working with my City Council colleagues to keep Phoenix the great place it has become to live, work and raise a family."
District 4 Councilman Phil Gordon made the motion to elect Mattox. "Councilman Mattox has demonstrated tremendous capacity for collaborating with his fellow council members and pulling us together on common issues. I look forward to working with him over the next 12 months," Gordon said.
Mattox, 48, has been a member of the council since 2000 and is serving his first four-year term.
He chairs the Natural Resources Subcommittee of the City Council and serves on the Housing and Neighborhoods and Family and Education subcommittees.
Before joining the council, Mattox chaired the Maryvale Village Planning Committee, Desert West Park Planning Committee, the West Phoenix Cactus League Spring Baseball Coalition and the Phoenix Surface Transportation Advisory Committee.
Mattox is vice president and associate broker for National Western Vistas Real Estate. He has resided in west Phoenix since 1979.
