Phoenix After-School Program is Beneficiary of Donations

June 24, 2002

Phoenix Afterschool Center (PAC), the city of Phoenix after school and summer recreation program, will accept a $10,000 donation on Tuesday, June 25 from Safeway to provide free meals to participants at three PAC sites. Safeway will donate the money to the Westside Food Bank to help with the costs of food and distribution to these PAC sites. The presentation ceremony will be held at Larry C. Kennedy Elementary School, 2702 E. Osborn Rd.

The Phoenix City Council Education, Youth and Arts Subcommittee has also given a contingency approval to authorize an additional $15,000 donation to the PAC food program, which will provide nutritious meals to participants at five additional PAC sites. This authorization is contingent upon approval by the Phoenix City Council at a formal council meeting on June 26.

This summer the city of Phoenix, Westside Food Bank/Kids Café Program, Safeway Inc., the Department of Education, United Food Bank and local Phoenix school districts team-up to provide more than 12,000 children with a healthy breakfast and/or lunch throughout the 6 to 8-week summer youth program. These meals may be the only nutritious meal that many of these kids receive during the day. This partnership will provide more than 400,000 meals for children and teens this summer. The donations make it possible for youth to receive meals at 93 of the 99 PAC sites (approximately 150 kids at each site) which are located in local schools, parks, community swimming pools, churches and recreation centers.

The PAC program provides fun, educational yet supervised activities in locations close to home. The program also gives kids an opportunity to learn, make new friends, exercise, express themselves through art and build positive self-esteem. For more information about this program, call 602-262-7370.
