Toni Garvey Named Phoenix Library Department Director
March 20, 2002
Library administrator Toni Garvey has been named director of the newly created Phoenix Library Department, which was part of the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department until a recent reorganization.
Garvey, who has been in charge of the city's library system since 1996, also will retain the title of City Librarian.
Garvey oversees services and programs for a growing library system that includes Burton Barr Central Library and 12 branches. Under her leadership, the Library Department has developed award-winning reading programs for children, opened a teen space at Central Library and received the highest ranking possible in a national study by the Reason Public Policy Institute. She will administer a $33 million bond program approved in 2001 for new library construction and other library improvements.
She previously was Director of Library Services for the Loudoun County Public Library in Leesburg, Va., and is currently president of the American Library Association's Public Library Association, which met recently in Phoenix. Garvey, who has a master's degree in library science from Western Michigan University, began her professional career with the Tucson-Pima Library system.
