Phoenix Kids Pride Announces Winners - Patriotism and Helping
Survivors Top List of Volunteer Activities
May 20, 2002
Volunteerism has been a growing characteristic of Valley youth over the years - and after the events of Sept. 11, there has been a heightened awareness of volunteering and the importance of community work. This year's annual Phoenix Kids Pride Awards winners are an indication of the commitment that has grown from our nation's young volunteers.
The Phoenix Kids Pride Awards, presented by the Phoenix Pride Commission, recognizes and honors young people who do special volunteer efforts within the community.
Approximately 100 winners, who were honored for their energy, creativity and volunteer works, were presented with their awards and treated to a baseball game at Bank One Ballpark on May 18. St. Luke's Health Initiatives is the program sponsor in cooperation with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Six individual and six group awards are given in three age categories, K-5th grade, 6th - 8th grade and 9th - 12th grade. Awarded volunteer efforts include:
· A group of elementary students collecting pennies for a New York family
affected by the Sept. 11 tragedy,
· A 12 year old that collects slippers for the comfort of children in hospitals
and homeless shelters, and
· A group of high school students educating others
on science through enthusiastic shows.
