Phoenix Renames Family Services Center to Honor John F. Long
May 14, 2002
The city of Phoenix will recognize John F. Long, Valley homebuilder and philanthropist, for his dedication and many contributions to the west Phoenix community by renaming the city's West Phoenix Human Services Center to the John F. Long Family Services Center.
Attending the renaming ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, at 3454 N. 48st Ave. (between Thomas and Indian School roads) will be Phoenix Vice Mayor Claude Mattox,
District 5; Councilman Doug Lingner, District 7; John Driggs, chairman, Heritage Commission; Gloria Hurtado, director, Phoenix Human Services Department, John F. Long; and members of his family.
The West Phoenix Human Services Center, the city's fifth family services center, was built in 1993 on land donated by John F. Long. A local Phoenix resident brought the suggestion of a name change before the city's Heritage Commission in the Fall of 2001.
Long served on the Phoenix City Council from 1966 to 1969. He also built and donated townhouses for the city's Affordable Housing Program, and donated labor and material to fill potholes for more than 550 miles of Phoenix streets.
The center has provided emergency and supportive services to area residents that
has enabled them to resolve personal and financial crises, stabilize family situations and help them become productive and self-sufficient citizens.
