Neighborhood Groups Honored For Community Improvements
May 3, 2002
One neighborhood association, working in conjunction with the Phoenix Police Department, managed to shut down four drug houses plaguing its streets.
Another neighborhood group collaborated with its youth and several city departments to build a skate park after skaters had been kicked off storefronts, schools, restaurants and other areas for several years.
The two are among 32 neighborhood groups that will be honored at the city's 13th annual Neighborhoods That Work awards celebration Tuesday, May 14, at the Phoenix Civic Plaza, Yuma Room and Exhibit Hall E, Third and Jefferson streets.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. with a buffet dinner that is free and open to the public. The Mayor's State of the Neighborhood address will take place at 6:50 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony. Nearly 1,000 neighborhood leaders and residents are expected to attend the program to celebrate and showcase neighborhood improvement efforts.
Four neighborhood associations from each of the eight city council districts comprise the groups being recognized and will receive $100. Among this group, two will be selected for the Mayor's Achievement Award that includes an additional $250.
The associations were selected in part for solving unusual challenges, mentoring the development of another neighborhood group, demonstrating creativity to secure neighborhood resources and/or supporting diversity among its members.
This year's event also includes performances by children's groups and local trumpeter Jesse McGuire.
