Central Phoenix Areas Selected for Pilot Project
Nov. 26, 2002
The Capitol Mall Association Business District and 7th Avenue Merchants Association
were selected recently by the Phoenix City Council to participate in a new,
two-year pilot program aimed at improving commercial corridors.
The program, known as the Commercial Revitalization Pilot Program, is a private,
public initiative sponsored by the city of Phoenix Neighborhood Services and
Community and Economic Development departments, Local Initiatives Support
Corporation and Arizona Multi-Bank.
The sponsors will work with the two business groups on improving property
conditions and boosting economic and customer bases, as well as provide assistance
on grant and loan applications. The program is expected to launch in January
2003.
Capitol Mall will focus its improvement south of Van Buren Street between
16th and 18th avenues, while the target area for 7th Avenue Merchants will
be between Indian School and Camelback roads along 7th Avenue.
Upgrades could include façade and building improvements, decreasing property
vacancies and recruiting new businesses.
Six business districts submitted proposals for the pilot program. The Capitol
Mall and 7th Avenue Merchants were selected as the ones having the most favorable
mix of neighborhood oriented businesses, organization experience and success
potential for the project.
