Phoenix Receives Top EPA Honors
Oct. 8, 2002
The city of Phoenix and the Sub Regional Operating Group (SROG) were awarded the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2002 Clean Water Act Recognition Award in the Pretreatment Category, signifying outstanding industrial pretreatment programs and a commitment to protecting and improving the waters of our nation. This marks the first time the EPA has recognized a multi-city partnership with an award of this magnitude.
The SROG cities of Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe received the award for demonstrating exceptional technological achievements and innovation in pollution abatement programs.
The industrial pretreatment program consists of education, outreach, regulation, and enforcement. The program includes the Compliance Academy developed by Phoenix's Water Services Department. The compliance academy is a set of free classes offered to industrial permit holders to assist them with understanding their permit, sampling, and laboratory issues, as well as the importance of protecting the environment.
The academy is so successful that the city of Phoenix and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality will present an abbreviated version of the training to representatives from Sonora, Mexico on October 10 and 11 at GateWay Community College.
