Mayor Gordon, Council Members Launch Front Porch Bench Initiative
Mayor Phil Gordon and City Council members launched the front porch bench initiative Saturday by giving away 200 benches to neighborhood leaders, Block Watch captains and other community leaders who have helped improve the quality of life in Phoenix neighborhoods.
"The front porch bench serves as a symbol and we are asking residents to get to know their neighbors, watch who comes and goes, know who is alone, who has children, or who doesn't belong in their neighborhood," said Gordon.
"By paying attention, being vigilant, and assisting others, we will help to build healthy, crime-free communities."
Through a generous partnership with Home Depot, the city will be giving away 1,000 benches and "Join Your Neighbors and Help Bench Crime" plaques to deserving residents who have given back to their communities.
"The Home Depot is deeply committed to the community and is proud to participate in a project that supports the city of Phoenix and its residents," said Tim Pfeiffer, regional vice president, Home Depot.
"We know how important a safe environment is for a thriving community, and by helping to provide the benches, The Home Depot is hoping to make the community a safer and more beautiful place for all of us to live and work in," he said.
To receive a donated bench, residents can nominate themselves or someone who is active in their neighborhood. Nominations will be reviewed by volunteers from the Phoenix Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association.
Residents also are encouraged to buy a bench and sit in their front porch or front yard. And, if residents already have a bench, they can participate in the initiative, too, by receiving a plaque from the city to put on their bench.
