Councilman Johnson Receives Community Award

South Phoenix Rising, a neighborhood association group, today recognized Councilman Michael Johnson for his contribution to the South Phoenix area at an awards ceremony.

"Councilman Johnson has and is still working with our Mayor and other council members to diligently address the issues that face our neighborhoods within the great city of Phoenix," said South Phoenix Rising Vice President Isaiah R. Shamsid-Deen. "The attention he gives to the issues within our communities are valuable and important, such as attracting new development, reducing hazardous waste facilities and reducing the number of liquor licenses in the area to name a few."

South Phoenix Rising was established in 1999 by residents in the South Phoenix area as a neighborhood Fight Back to prevent crime and enhance social initiatives.

Prior to his election to the Phoenix City Council in 2000, Johnson served in the Phoenix Police Department for 21 years. He also has served on the South Mountain Village Planning Committee and the Rio Salado Advisory Committee.

Councilman Johnson represents District 8, which includes central and south Phoenix. He chairs the Downtown, Sports and International Subcommittee, he also serves on the Knowledge Economy, Education, Culture and Genomics; Housing, Neighborhood, Economic Revitalization and Historic Preservation; and Public Safety subcommittees.
