City Mourns Loss of Officers
Eric White and Jason Wolfe
Aug. 30, 2004
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, the City Council and the entire city organization
are grieving the loss of Police Officers Jason Wolfe and Eric White, who died
in the line of duty Saturday.
The following is a statement from the mayor:
"With no time to heal from last week's death of Judge Kiefer and the serious
injuries of two others - our grieving suddenly multiplies by heartbreaking
proportions. Two officers are dead. A third is shot. A fourth is injured.
That is hard for most of us to comprehend. But for police officers, it's
simply the reality of their life's work - the nature of their life's passion.
Every day, every police officer on our force willingly leaves the safety
of their home, the comfort of their family, the smiles of their children -
and sets out "to protect and to serve" our community - their community. And
they do all this knowing full-well that "too many things" can go "too terribly
wrong". And the families who lovingly kiss them goodbye each day, well, they
know it too.
These men and women are the heroes of this community - officers who sacrifice
their own lives to protect people they've never met - families who wait at
the door for someone who is not coming home again. Officers who go to work
every day -- and families who nervously pray that they can do it all again
tomorrow.
But for two officers, tomorrow never came.
And my thoughts, prayers and sympathies go out to the Wolfe and White families
and to the families and friends of every police officer, every 911 operator
and every civilian touched by yesterday's tragedy - along with our hope for
many more tomorrows - and no more yesterdays."
