City of Phoenix Employees Raise $1.3 Million For United Way

City of Phoenix employees raised a record $1.3 million for the 2004 Valley
of the Sun United Way campaign, a 10.4 percent increase over last year's $1.1
million.
Through payroll pledges and special fund-raising events, city employees
collected $1,306,040 during their four-week fund drive.
"The generosity and commitment of the city of Phoenix and its employees is
remarkable," said Paul J. Luna, Valley of the Sun United Way president. "The
investment made by the employees will help us improve more lives and address
critical issues in the areas of learning, empowering and caring throughout
our community."
United Way officials and city employees celebrated the city's successful
campaign this week at an awards breakfast at Phoenix Civic Plaza. Seventeen
city departments and individuals were recognized for their efforts at the
event.
Other highlights from the employee campaign:
- 8,577 city employees (60 percent) contributed to the campaign
- 365 contributed two hours pay per month
- 214 contributed at least $1,000 each "
- 25 donated $2,500 each
- Employees could choose to direct their contributions to nearly 500 health
and human service programs, including a special fund to assist fellow employees
in need of emergency assistance. The employee fund received $38,412 in donations.
