Councilman Stanton Asks To Advance Construction of Camelback
Road Underpass
Dec. 20, 2004
Councilman Greg Stanton is asking the city to accelerate planning and construction
of an underpass at approximately 25th Street and Camelback Road.
"There have been too many fatalities in this area," said Councilman Stanton.
"Construction of a pedestrian safety underpass is critical. As the representative
of the Camelback Corridor, I have long advocated for improved pedestrian access
and safety. I will work with the mayor, council and city manager to build
the underpass more quickly."
An estimated 2,000 pedestrians cross Camelback Road between 24th and 26th
streets each day; of that approximately 400 cross mid-block without using
a signalized crosswalk. A study by the Street Transportation Department recommended
a pedestrian overpass at 25th Street and Camelback Road to address the large
numbers of pedestrians in the area.
After several public meetings, residents, businesses and the Camelback Village
Planning Committee agreed on an underpass design rather than a bridge at approximately
25th Street and Camelback Road.
The underpass, which will cost approximately $3.3 million, is funded in
part by the city and the federal government.
