Phoenix Selects Management Interns
Brandie Ishcomer, Ben Lane and Brian Murawski have been selected to participate in the city of Phoenix's 55th annual Management Intern Program.
The Management Intern Program is designed to attract, develop and retain innovative people in local government. The three participants, who were selected from a competitive group of more than 115 applicants across the country, began their internships June 28 and will rotate through the City Manager's Office, Budget and Research Department and departments providing direct public services in order to experience the spectrum of municipal government.
The Management Intern Program allows individuals who have earned or completed course work toward a master's degree in public administration or a related field to work for the city for one year. Upon completion of the internship, candidates may apply for permanent positions with the city.
Background information about the interns:
- Brandie Ishcomer earned her master's degree in American Indian studies from the University of Arizona. Ishcomer previously worked as a lead case manager with the Native American Connections. She also has worked as a graduate assistant in teaching for the University of Arizona; site director for the YMCA Summer Teen Camp in Tucson, Ariz.; and an administrative assistant to the provost and dean of faculty at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. She received her undergraduate degree in German culture studies and Central European history and politics from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. As an undergraduate, Ishcomer participated in a yearlong fellowship program at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms Universität in Bonn, Germany.
- Ben Lane recently completed his master's degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. Lane also holds a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, Texas; and an undergraduate degree in political science from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. During graduate school, Lane interned with the Retirement Systems Division of the Department of the State Treasurer in Raleigh, N.C.; and was a research assistant at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. Prior to graduate school, Lane was a practicing attorney.
- Brian Murawski earned his master's degree in public service and administration from the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Until recently, he worked with the Texas Sea Grant College Program and has interned with the North Central Texas Council of Governments and H.B. Zachry Co. Murawski earned his undergraduate degree in economics from Texas A&M University.
During the history of Phoenix's internship program, many participants have continued employment with the city after their internship year. Others have gone on to hold positions in federal, state, county and other city governments, including many who are city managers or assistant city managers throughout the nation.
Among the alumni of the Management Intern Program currently employed by the city are Rick Naimark, executive assistant to the city manager; Lisa Takata, assistant to the city manager; Lionel Lyons, development services director; Kevin Keogh, finance director; Tammy Perkins, neighborhood services director; David Cavazos, acting aviation director; Carolyn Bristo, assistant public works director; and Gina Ramos Montes, deputy human services director.
