City of Phoenix To Dedicate Regional Park Renovation, Improvements
Nov. 16, 2004
Mayor Phil Gordon and Vice Mayor Peggy Bilsten will join members of the
Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board at Cave Creek Recreation Area - Sweetwater,
25th Avenue and Sweetwater, on Nov. 20 at 9 a.m. to dedicate major improvements
to facilities in the recreation area.
The 527-acre Cave Creek Recreation Area includes the Rose Mofford Sports
Complex and four neighborhood parks including CCRA - Sweetwater, all connected
by a network of paved bike paths. The recreation area is built along the Cave
Creek Wash just east of Interstate 17 between Dunlap and Thunderbird avenues.
The Rose Mofford Sports Complex attracts numerous national soccer and softball
tournaments each year.
The project improvements were made at the sports complex and CCRA - Cholla
and CCRA - Sweetwater parks. Among the features of the project are lighted
soccer, softball and multi-use fields; acres of open-play area; more than
a mile of additional bike path; an all-weather track and a state-of-the-art
off-leash area for dogs (which is expected to open in December).
The total cost for the project was $7.17 million, funded mainly by the Phoenix
Parks and Preserve Initiative, a voter-approved sales tax initiative. Additional
funding came from 1988 bonds.
